Objectives/Goals:

Students will be able define symbolism or imagery, identify the literary technique and how it impacts the audience.

Students will understand how Poe’s work reflects his historical and cultural perspective.

Students will write, review and edit a creative piece while considering the task, purpose and audience.

Evaluate how an author’s work reflects his or her historical/cultural perspective. (11-12.RL.3.C)
Review, revise, and edit writing with consideration for the task, purpose, and audience. (9-10.W.3.A.a)
Analyze the representation of a subject in two different artistic mediums, including what is emphasized or absent in each treatment (11-12.RI.3.A).

Kansas Learning Standards:

Write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences. (W.7.12, W.8.12, W.9-10.12, W.11-12.12)
Compare and contrast a fictional portrayal of a time, place, or character and a historical account of the same period as a means of understanding how authors of fiction use or alter history (RL.7.9)
